Girl in Halloween Costume Mistakenly Shot by Cousin

An 8-year-old in Pennsylvania was dressed up in her Halloween costume this morning as she paraded about the yard excited about the trick-or-treating to come later this month. The young girl wore a black outfit with a black hat and a white feather as she frolicked around outside. It was dark, and the little child’s silhouette was outlined by a bonfire where her family was sitting outside their home. Unfortunately, her aunt caught sight of black and white and immediately rushed to get a gun. The woman, Janet Grant, asked her son to shoot the creature, which she assumed was a noxious skunk that was constantly wandering onto the property.

Thomas Grant did as his mother asked, and took the gun from inside the home. His mother shined a flashlight into the night where the flash of white was located, and Thomas shot his weapon. He hit his target and shot again. Then they heard a shriek that belonged to a human, not an animal. Thomas rushed into the field to find his cousin with a bullet in her shoulder and another in her abdomen. She was airlifted to the Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital where she underwent surgery. The young girl remains in critical condition.

The police do not believe that Thomas was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the shooting, and authorities have not yet chosen whether or not they will file charges. It is not yet known if the family of the 8-year-old will sue their cousin and aunt for the unintentional assault.
