Nationwide, the number of railroad accidents involving pedestrians has significantly increased this year. Just through the first five months of the calendar year, there was a 26 percent increase according to federal accident data. In 2012 during those same months, there were a total of 158 fatal accidents, whereas this year there were 199. Sadly, pedestrians being fatally struck by oncoming trains is not an irregular occurrence these days according to the numbers given by the Federal Railroad Administration. This year during that same block of time, there were also another 356 pedestrians who were injured form these same incidents since May until now, meaning that here is clearly a problem with safety that needs to be addressed. Many of these accidents are occurring when a person is illegal walking near or on the train tracks and therefore placing themselves into harm’s way. According to the statistics of last year’s train accidents, they actually decreased by 16.5 percent whereas the pedestrian involved accidents increased by 7.5 percent.
As you can see, train accidents are not uncommon. And while there are some that occur because of a person’s irresponsible choice to trespass property, there are also many accidents that can occur due to train malfunctions, driver errors and negligence, collisions with cars in railway crossings, and more. In the event that you have been injured or have
lost a loved one due to a train accident, please do not wait another moment to discuss your case with a Shreveport injury attorney as soon as possible. At
